Parents' Day

Mother

I am not one

Lost mine and my mother-in-law

Father

Could not make my husband one

Lost mine and my father-in-law

Why does it matter

that I don’t fit in these boxes?

It shouldn’t

But the noise

In the world

Is difficult to ignore

When Hallmark cards with sugary sweet verses

Tell us most sincerely

That these particular labels most definitely matter

Why isn’t there a day

For those of us who are

simply trying to live the very best life we can

despite incalculable pain

despite the deepest grief

despite the tenderest of wounds

Perhaps there should be

days in the year to celebrate

Every

Single

Other

Physiological

Function.

Happy Respiration Day

Happy Digestion Day

Happy Skin Day

Can you imagine the outcry

from those who have issues with their lungs or their guts

or those with rashes,constantly scratching

Why can’t we just simply celebrate each other

every single day?

Not for a biological function

But for simply who we are
