Anna
It was September, four years ago when I felt that I needed something nice for me. After my second miscarriage had happened in April of the same year I was heartbroken, struggling with my weight and hopeless. I really needed to have some form of self-love. I needed to make a statement and a commitment that I would not completely lose myself in the persistent tar pitch darkness of my grief.
I had the urge to get a new tattoo.
That tattoo didn’t have to be large. I wanted something simple. Just a small chestnut and an acorn, the fruits of two trees I love. I chose the silhouettes of the fruits to be drawn in minimal black line.
When I walked out of the tattoo studio, my mum called me. While talking about my new tattoo she said, "Oh, that are two autumn fruits." Right then, a realisation struck me like lightning. My babies would have both been born in autumn! They would have been my very loved autumn fruits. This thought helped me leave some of my pain behind. I accepted it somehow. I embraced it. I realised that the tattoo was a way to start anew while having both of them with me. I saw a way forward, where there was none before.
Sometimes when people notice my tattoo, they say that it looks like a small illustration in a children’s colouring book. That makes me happy every time. I think of what the tattoo symbolises for me and think that that’s very fitting.
I have the autumn fruits tattooed on my arm, the arm that would have held them and carried them. We are still on our journey, enjoying the beautiful flowers and trees with no hurry to get anywhere.

Sarebbero stati i miei amatissimi frutti d'autunno.
Penso a cosa rappresenta per me e mi sembra davvero azzeccato.
