Lullaby for an unborn child

Helit R Broza

Hush little baby
You can now close your eyes
Your mama’s asleep
Her lips murmur “Goodbye”
Your papa went sailing,
He forgot about you
The rocking chair, baby,
Will never lull you.

The tiny cloths, folded
Neatly stacked in a row
Will never know milk
Or bananas or stew
Will never need washing
Or mending a tear
Never fall in the mud
Or swing high in the air.

All the dolls bow in shame
How they wanted to play!
Can you hear them my love?
They are calling your name.

The bears sulk and complain
And the elephants too
They are tired of waiting,
They were waiting for YOU.

There is nowhere to go
There is nothing to do
The wind shrieks through the crib
That is empty of  you
The brush and the comb
That will never part hair
Lie unclaimed in the drawer
They just look up
And stare.

Hush little baby
You have nothing to fear
We will get by, somehow
Though we’ll miss you down here
I have wrapped you in blankets
Of velvet and stars
Rest in peace, little one
Wherever you are.
