On Mother’s Day, it is a reminder, another one, that I am childless.
However, this year I received a 'Best Auntie' card from my niece Hannah, all crafted with care. I felt overwhelmed by such a thoughtful gesture.
I was dreading the day. I did not want to see others with a card to say thank you, Mother.
I am the only one in the room who is not to receive anything. It is another reminder that I am not a mother, that I lost the chance to have a child.
All I can do is find solace in the fact that I am an auntie who is appreciated. Valued by what I do, the presents, and the birthdays to visit and play to take an interest in them. I have kept the card to hold it with care.
Yes, I cried afterwards; it doesn’t take the pain away from the grief that I do not have someone who can call me 'mother'. That I can never have a card from my own child, that I send my cards into the world. But at least someone did. I can display this one with pride.
