How Childless Women are Represented on Screen

VOICE ENGINE is a research project that gathers data on the views and experiences of women who do not have children, whether by choice or not. The aim is to focus on improving the representation of childless and childfree women on the screen.

Rachel Tillotson is a filmmaker and Senior Film Lecturer based in the South West. Her research work looks at female characters from Film and TV narratives who are typically stereotyped or portrayed as victims and looks at reframing them to give them better agency and screen significance.

It's important to focus on crafting fictional characters and their experiences rather than relying on AI-generated content.

Rachel’s goal is to create fictional characters based on the research collected. The ambition is to develop personas from your true voices.

We are striving for authenticity. Ultimately, VOICE ENGINE hopes the work will be impactful so that one day you can see yourselves better represented on screen.

VOICE ENGINE is inviting individuals to participate and to complete one or two questionnaires and for some people to be invited to focus groups.

The representation of the childless on screen and across the media in general is misinformed, distorted and often unfavourable. You can read how people feel on the subject via submissions received for Childless in the Media from World Childless Week 2023 HERE
