Rescue

Ruth Guest

In the midst of so much grief, so much loss

Came a timid lanky brindle boy

Abandoned, awkward and anxious

Four spindly legs and the deepest darkest eyes

Sheldon 2008(?) - 2020

Looking now for meaning and for purpose

Searching for a family, a brood, a tribe

Sheldon came in, lured by the squeezy cheese

All three of us lost, looking for acceptance

Dancing around about each other

Venturing out on our first walk together

A damaged soul reached out to us that day

And our own damaged souls called right back

Uneasy, nervous and cagey at first

All of us restless, fearful and scared

Slowly, slowly we found our way through

Velma, Shaggy and Scooby dooby doo

Our little family, our little clan

A focus, a reason, a meaning at last

He gave us his love, his trust and his heart

We gave back our love, our trust, our hearts

A graceful gentle gangly greyhound

Barrelling into our lives that February

Fetching hope and bringing joyfulness

A rescue hound who rescued us right back

‘It’s only a dog’, how little they know

He’s the little man we could not have

Our little one, our boy, our reason to be

He’s ours, simply ours. And us, we are his.
