Paper Boat

Jenny Focht

I wrote this song to express my grief as I realized my dream of having children was slipping away, and I needed to make a choice to release this dream.

The image of a paper boat is a tangible symbol of love and longing throughout the bittersweet process of letting go. I am not always sad and grieving, but when I am, this is what it feels like.

Paper Boat

You’re like a little boat made of paper

I place in the river and watch you sail away

And let you be free from me, and me from you

Oh it was my dream to sail with you

Ride the waves and drift on calmer waters

But now we’re parting ways

Oh, darling, oh

I stand on the bank and I watch you

Going on your way, ’til you fade from my sight

And my vision blurs

Oh now we’re parting ways

Oh, darling, oh

Oh the dreams and the visions

Now tears are my food day and night

Oh the dreams and the visions

Now tears are my food day and night

I stand on the bank and I watch you

Going on your way, ’til you fade from my sight

Oh now we’re parting ways

Oh, darling, oh, darling

Oh, darling, oh…..
